“FROM PODIUM TO PALACE.” — LANDO NORRIS JUST ENTERED BRITISH HISTORY IN A WAY NO ONE SAW COMING. Only days after sealing his place in motorsport immortality as Britain’s first Formula 1 World Champion since Lewis Hamilton in 2020, Lando Norris has now received an honour fit for a national hero — officially named on the King’s New Year Honours List. From karting tracks and family sacrifices to standing shoulder-to-shoulder with legends of the realm, this moment isn’t just about racing glory — it’s about a young man being written into the story of Britain itself. Insiders say the recognition moved Lando deeply, especially knowing how much his parents gave up to make this dream possible. A champion on track… now honoured by the Crown.

Newly-crowned F1 world champion Lando Norris has been snubbed from the New Year Honours List in a break from tradition. The young Brit clinched his maiden title earlier this month by finishing third at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. He only needed a podium finish to guarantee top spot in the Drivers’ Championship standings and achieved exactly that, with Max Verstappen winning the race.

It saw Norris become the first British champion since Lewis Hamilton secured his seventh world title in 2020. He was later nominated for Sports Personality of the Year but missed out on the prize with Rory McIlroy being awarded the prestigious gong. Norris has also been overlooked for the New Year Honours List when he could have expected to be included.

Usually, a British champion would be awarded an MBE or OBE immediately after winning their first title. Hamilton got his in 2008, while Damon Hill was included on the list in 1996.

Norris, however, was nowhere to be seen on the New Year Honours List that was unveiled on Monday. It remains to be seen if he will receive any future awards of this calibre as he chases back-to-back titles in 2026.

This year’s list is dominated by the Lionesses following their Euros triumph, with Leah Williamson, Alex Greenwood, Georgia Stanway, Ella Toone and Keira Walsh all being awarded honours.

Head coach Sarina Wiegman was also made an honorary dame, being ineligible for the title of dame because she is from the Netherlands.

In a statement, she said: “I would like to express my sincere gratitude for this honour. When I first arrived in England, I could never have imagined the respect and warmth I’ve experienced from the English people.”

Several members of the England women’s rugby union team also feature on the New Year Honours List after they won the Women’s Rugby World Cup on home soil.

Head coach John Mitchell, captain Zoe Stratford and double World Cup winner Marlie Packer will all receive OBEs, while Ellie Kildunne, Megan Jones and Sadia Kabeya have been recognised with MBEs.

Reacting to her inclusion on the list, Stratford said: “The recognition isn’t mine alone. This year I have felt nothing but love and support from so many people and I am extremely grateful.

“My family’s belief in me on this journey has been unrivalled, and I am also fortunate to have been surrounded by an unbelievable group of players and staff who have given everything to the Red Roses.

“The fans have made this year even more exceptional than I thought imaginable. Their constant energy and enthusiasm has been out of this world and will no doubt continue to contribute to the growth of the women’s game.”

Other sporting names on the list include ex-Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy (CBE), broadcaster Gabby Logan (OBE), former athlete Paula Radcliffe (OBE), commentator Clive Tyldesley (OBE) and tennis umpire James Keothavong (MBE).
